Concern about the ecological, social and psychological consequences of our consumer culture is growing.
So what could be simpler than spending 24hrs avoiding the shopping one Saturday and celebrating ‘Buy Nothing Day’ instead!

(Our 'Free Shop' on Buy Nothing Day in November 2006)
Why don’t YOU spend a day not spending?
Some things that you can think about and do:
- Make jam, spend time with people, go for a walk, celebrate stuff!
- Walking & cycling is free! Leave your car behind for a week.
- Try to grow some of your own food. Perhaps get an allotment.
- Maybe you could borrow/hire the item you are thinking of buying.
- Make a tape or CD for a friend instead of spending a fiver!
- Use rechargeable batteries instead of buying disposable ones.
- Join your local Freecycle group and keep things out of the tip.
- Ask for the book ‘Save Cash, Save the Planet’ at the library.
- If you are buying - look for ‘Local’ or ‘Fairtrade’ options.
- Why not ‘go green’ and switch to a renewable electricity supplier.
- Try to find independent stores to buy your fruit, vegetables, bread & other goods from. Money spent within the local economy benefits real people rather than remote supermarket shareholders.
Buying nothing can be fun. Share it with people. Tell us about it!
